Enchanted by the Northern Lights, imposing glaciers and untouched wildlife, National Geographic photographer Lana Tannir takes the audience on an impressive journey through the Arctic - a region full of contrasts, extremes and unexpected beauty.
Even as a teenager, she dreamed of seeing this mysterious world with her own eyes. Inspired by Philip Pullman's book series His Dark Materials, in which the Arctic appears as a magical place full of talking polar bears, northern lights and spiritual depth, she made an early decision: one day she would travel to this remote, luminous world herself. Today - many years later - she has done just that.
She has been exploring the polar regions for over a decade and has traveled to some of the most remote and vulnerable places on earth: from the silent, snow-covered forests of Finland to an expedition to the geographic North Pole - a place where every connection to the outside world is silenced and polar bears move silently across the splintering pack ice. She tells of the shimmering heat of active volcanoes, thundering waterfalls and glowing glaciers in Iceland, of rescuing stranded puffins on the cliffs of the Westfjords, of visiting the world's northernmost research station - and of a 20-day whale expedition in the Norwegian Sea, during which she experienced the power, grace and fragility of Arctic wildlife up close between storm fronts and the Northern Lights. In the midst of snowstorms, rough oceans and freezing cold, she discovers not only the physical harshness of this world, but also the deep human warmth that is alive in the remote, traditional communities of the north - sustained by centuries-old folklore, a strong sense of community and an unshakeable bond with nature. Here, where life thrives despite the most adverse conditions, a quiet strength is revealed that touches and inspires.
"Fascination Arctic" invites you to immerse yourself in the diversity, magic and fragility of this last great wilderness. The presentation shows the exciting contrasts between light and darkness, silence and storm, ice and fire - and makes you feel how deeply rooted the connection between man, animal and landscape is in this remote region. The Arctic can be experienced here not only as a geographical space, but also as a mirror of our inner contrasts - and as a call to see the fragility of our planet with new eyes and to protect it.
