LAPPLAND – Europas Wilder Norden

In the far north of Europe, north of the Arctic Circle, lies a very special region. For some it is Europe's last wilderness, for others a place of peace, tranquillity and vastness: Lapland!

The country stretches across four different countries: northern Norway, northern Sweden, northern Finland and the far north-western tip of Russia. The population density is one of the lowest in Europe. Moose, bears, wolverines and Arctic foxes share the taiga, tundra and mountains with thousands of reindeer. Puffins breed on the coasts and white-tailed eagles fly their circles.

The Sami, the indigenous people of this "land", have lived here for thousands of years. They used to follow the reindeer on their long migrations, and the animals still play an important role in the lives of this indigenous people today.

Bernd Römmelt has been traveling through this region for over 20 years. On foot, by kayak, by car and sometimes by helicopter, he has set out to explore this wild land in all seasons.
