Based on a photo of two young indigenous people from 1911 who were deported from the Peruvian Amazon region to London, filmmaker Tatiana Fuentes embarks on a journey into the past full of questions. She knows little more about the fate of Omarino and Aredomi than their names. So she begins to carefully collect archive material from the time of the rubber boom, which she combines with hand-edited Super 8 images. In doing so, she reflects critically on the power of images and the official narrative of history. I wonder what happened to Omarino and Aredomi? In the encounter with their descendants in present-day Peru, the boundaries between reality and dream, past and present slowly become blurred.

LA MEMORIA DE LAS MARIPOSAS creates a poetic and haunting counter-narrative to colonial extractivism - a cinematic ritual of memory that conjures up the spirits of the forest and the dead.

As a supporting film, we are showing ABOUT HAPPY HIPPOS AND SAD PEACOCKS, a decolonial animal fable with talking hippos and peacocks.
