Since the avant-garde programs of early modernism, the phenomenon of latency as something hidden, not yet visible, as something that announces itself without having already taken shape, has permeated numerous artistic movements and concepts of the 20th century. With the general availability of software applications that use artificial intelligence to generate text, images, audio and video, a new dimension of latency has entered artistic production. This latency is inherent in the architectures of the AI models themselves: In so-called latent space, features, patterns and relationships are encoded from the training data, opening up the space of possibility for outputs to be generated later.

The exhibition examines the figure of latency using a small selection of works as examples. Two groups can be distinguished: One shows works in which the phenomenon can be experienced as an aesthetic, social and historical category and in which latency is effective and can be identified as a phenomenon inherent to the work. The second group of works shows the contemporary output of generative AI art, i.e. works that have been created with the help of AI. In this context, questions can be raised about the "afterlife" of images in generative image processes, as laid out in art history, for example in Aby Warburg's concept of mnemosyne, and as contained in an aesthetics of prediction, the extrapolation on the basis of pre-existent images.
