Le nozze di Figaro

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro (1786) is one of the great social comedies in the history of opera. In Count Almaviva's house, everything revolves around the planned marriage of his servants Figaro and Susanna. It soon becomes clear that a dense web of desire, jealousy and intrigue stands in the way of what should be a joyous event. In order to untangle this web, lists are devised, secret letters are slipped, identities are swapped and class boundaries are shifted. Increasingly surprising twists and turns take the general confusion to extremes until everything is resolved in a brilliant showdown at the end.

Director Esteban Muñoz Herrera relies on a theatrical aesthetic that does not 'update', but rather makes visible how power, desire and dependency are organized in the play.
