Learning from Necropolis. Erwachen aus der friedlichen Stille des Mainzer Hauptfriedhofs lebendige Räume?

In the organizer's words:

The exhibition "Learning from Necropolis" invites visitors to look at Mainz's main cemetery from a new perspective. Based on the question "Is Mainz's main cemetery becoming a living space?", the exhibition aims to reflect on the significance of this once modern infrastructure for the city and at the same time develop visions for its future. It also examines what role the cemetery can play in the urban fabric of the future.

In the Design 1 course in the winter semester 2025/26 of the Bachelor's degree course in Architecture at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, the cemetery was examined as a field of study. In four consecutive exercises, the students approached the site step by step - via scale, cartography, typology and design. They analyzed the cemetery as an independent spatial unit with its own structure and logic. Understood as a necropolis or as a city in its own right, the cemetery thus becomes an open thinking space that invites students to learn architecture and develop a conscious design between memory and future.

Vernissage: 21.04.26, 18:00 hrs
