Twelve hours in the life of an abandoned man: His best friend is preparing a party for him to distract him from his ex-boyfriend's break-up. While she gathers all his friends together, he strolls through the city, lost in thought - and is confronted with his demons. They had already haunted him once before, in his old life, from which he had fled to live like a hermit in this new place. But then he met R. His ghosts disappeared, especially Modesta, who had visited him regularly since his childhood. Now that he is alone with himself again, she reappears on the scene.
With "Modesta", Enrico Ippolito tells a modern and eerie version of Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway" in a multifaceted and elegant way. In a city made up of many interconnected streets, the protagonist loses himself in an increasingly threatening stream of consciousness.
Enrico Ippolito is a writer, journalist and co-editor of 'Delfi. Magazine for New Literature'. His debut novel 'Was rot war' was published in 2021 and was nominated for the Rauriser Literaturpreis. Several short stories have followed in recent years. 'Modesta' is his first publication with Korbinian Verlag. He lives in Berlin.
