The film tells the story of 19-year-old folk singer Bob Dylan's rise from small clubs in New York to concert halls and the Newport Folk Festival, where he picks up an electric guitar for the first time.
Director James Mangold created a cinematic monument to Johnny Cash 20 years ago with "Walk the Line". He now succeeds perfectly once again with his portrait of singer-songwriter icon Bob Dylan. He very cleverly limits himself to the early years, which makes the portrait all the more intense. And more exciting than the standard genre-typical chapters about the rise, the sell-out of ideals, the drugs, the fall, the purification. It also avoids the second classic biopic trap of presenting the object of desire with a halo and soft focus. Not a PR fairytale, but a man and artist with rough edges. (programmkino.de)
