What is grotesque?
Perhaps the attempt to swallow one's right eye in order to recognize oneself better. Or the thought of being able to see with your ears. Maybe just the feeling of going home after a literary evening a little twisted - but clearly enlightened.
In their live radio play reading "Das blaue Auge des Betrachters", Madeleine Milojcic and Sava Freudenfeld guide their audience through the dazzling landscapes of the grotesque with linguistic finesse, musical interjections and witty humor - the art form that interweaves beauty and absurdity so closely that you can hardly tell what you are laughing at. Or thinking.
At the center are texts by H. H. Schmitz (1880-1913) and Sava Freudenfeld himself - two authors separated by a century, united by their love of language play, methodical confusion and well-directed intellectual sideways steps.
"A sense of the grotesque is like a sense of beauty - only with more of a wink."
And sometimes - yes, you look and get a black eye.
Not from watching. From overlooking.
