The city of Vienna is in crisis. After years of liberal rule by Duke Vincentio, immorality is rampant. The people are rebellious and public order is under threat. High time for a change of policy! Vincentio does not see himself in a position to carry this out. A governor is needed, a man without scruples or conscience. The Duke commissions the young, ambitious Lord Angelo to take over the reins of government for a time. He himself will go on a long journey and return when the situation has stabilized. At least that is what Vincentio pretends. In reality, he disguises himself and stays in the city to observe Angelo's activities. Nothing escapes his notice: not the destruction of all the entertainment establishments in the suburbs, not the death sentence against Claudio, who dared to impregnate his fiancée. Nor the bigotry of Angelo, who, after an encounter with Claudio's sister Isabella, is forced to admit that he desires the beautiful novice.
In Measure for Measure, William Shakespeare deals with the question of a sensible, humane approach to power and authority. First performed in 1604, the play is both a highly suspenseful political thriller and a hearty comedy. Director Tilman Gersch aims to explore this field of tension with relish. He will be supported by stage and costume designer Petra Straß, who has already designed several of Pfalzbau Bühnen's own productions, including the Goldoni comedy Das Kaffeehaus, a tender portrayal of Ludwigshafen Mitte. In the current production, she faces the challenge of dressing over 40 players in imaginative costumes, as the Pfalzbau Bürger Bühne and the Beethovenchor Ludwigshafen will be performing alongside the professional ensemble. As usual, pianist Frank Rosenberger will be the musical director, this time with a five-piece live ensemble.
