Cio-Cio San waits and hopes, for years. She waits to see the man again who promised her a life of love and security. US Lieutenant Pinkerton, on the other hand, bought his bride and with her her dreams, captivated by a country that is foreign to him, "where the houses are as flexible as the contracts". Fascinated, Puccini took a Western look at the "Japanese tragedy" and regarded his work as his favorite and best. With beautiful tones and dramatic colors, he drew the portrait of a woman who was allowed to become more of a projection than a person. Director Ulrike Schwab, who comes to Theater Bremen for her third work, devotes herself to this portrait of a person caught between devotion and hope in the field of tension of missed opportunities in life and love. In the end, hope remains, not for Pinkerton's return, but for self-empowerment. And a focus on the essentials: oneself.
