Film discussion on the topic of "A conscious approach to fashion consumption" and the social and ecological consequences of a fashion industry that is still largely based on the exploitation of people and nature.
FR/PT/BGD/DK 2019 | Director: Rubaiyat Hossain | 95 min | FSK 12 | OmU
This impressive film was inspired by the 2013 collapse of the Rana Plaza textile factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which was caused by a fire and killed over a thousand people. Many of the textile factories in the Global South are in a very questionable condition, despite the fact that they produce for the international fashion industry on a piecework basis - from fast fashion to luxury fashion. Over 80 % of textile workers are women. According to director Rubaiyat Hossain, she wanted to make "a film about the struggle of courageous young women who rebel against the conditions". It has become a feature film with a documentary character. The working conditions are characterized by injustice and exploitation. When the workers want to form a union, their situation comes to a head. The film is touching and makes it clear once again that there are people behind our clothes. People who want to live and work decently. "Made in Bangladesh" also encourages us to think about how we deal with clothing and our consumer behavior. An important film, especially in the consumer-heavy pre-Christmas period.
Following the semi-documentary film MADE IN BANGLADESH, Susanne Barta from Bolzano and Sabine Loh from Heidelberg will talk about the effects of the current difficult economic and social situation, not only in Europe, and the exacerbating effects of the global US customs policy. In particular, they will shed light on the conditions under which, even after "Dhaka 2013", mainly women in the Global South continue to produce clothing for the world markets.
