In the fight against violence and oppression in her own family, a young woman is prepared to go to extremes. A harrowing, important and courageous film about female self-assertion.

Screening of the award-winning Brazilian film "MANAS". Followed by an audience discussion with human rights activist Marie Henriqueta Ferreira Cavalcante, who supported the script development with her experience and expertise. She is a partner of the Pater Beda Action Group, which has been campaigning for human rights in Brazil for over 60 years.

Brazil, on the banks of the Amazon. The young Marcielle (Tielle) lives here with her parents and three siblings. Despite superficial affection, the atmosphere at home is tense and restrictive. In order to escape this and do the same as her idolized older sister, Tielle first sets off on one of the barges that regularly pass by on the river. But even this does not take her away from the island. So the courageous young woman finally decides to stand up to oppression. And she is prepared to go to extremes to do so.

Director Marianna Brennand documents the terrible injustice suffered by many young women in her home country in this stirring and masterfully staged drama. A tough and pleasantly unforgiving film. (Text: IFFMH)
