Manuel Gerst: Die Verwandlung

In the organizer's words:

Information about the event:

Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning transformed into a giant vermin. His family's pity soon turns to alienation and aggression; the last anchors to the sphere of the human are the violin playing of his beloved sister and an erotically charged picture of a lady in fur. In the end, his death is a redemption for all.

Manuel Gerst brings Kafka's famous story to the stage as a happening from the event industry. References to bachelor parties and aggression reduction in the group meet action art and destruction art. Kafka's parable is read here as a story about disability, in the field of tension between being injured and being intact. The aggression towards the deformed other in the story is turned into aggression against the object on stage. In the end, it doesn't matter what position the audience takes - the dent remains the same. Let he who is without sin cast the first apple.

About the artists:

Manuel Gerst studied Applied Theater Studies in Giessen with Heiner Goebbels and Stage and Costume Design in Munich with Katrin Brack. He is a founding member of the performance group Monster Truck, which realized projects at the interface of theater and visual arts in the independent scene and at the Stadttheater from 2005 to 2022. Monster Truck's plays have toured internationally and won several awards (including the George Tabori Main Prize). In 2019, Manuel Gerst was awarded the Hein Heckroth Prize for Stage Design. Since summer 2024, he has been working as an agent for diversity at Theaterhaus Gessnerallee Zurich. He also continues to work as a director and stage designer.
