Maria Barker, wife of British diplomat Sir Frederick Barker, flies to Paris. In the salon of the Russian Grand Duchess Anna, she meets the bon vivant Anthony Halton. They become close - without him knowing her name. Back in London, Frederick tries to improve his relationship with Maria, especially as the butler has become engaged, referring to the Barkers' seemingly perfect married life. But then Frederick invites an old war buddy over: Anthony, who is still looking for his unknown angel...
Ernst Lubitsch directs his triangle (tragi)comedy with his usual sophistication. And casts Marlene Dietrich - who had become a star in her roles as half-silky women, vamps and sex symbols - as a perfect, glamorous lady.
