The Middle Ages are generally regarded as a dark age, characterized by feudalism and rigid hierarchies. But also as an "in-between time" - between the achievements of antiquity and the Renaissance - which seems static and "in limbo" from today's global perspective. For choreographer and performer Martina De Dominicis, it becomes a lens through which she views the present.
Together with her stage partner Magdalena Forster and composer Manuel Riegler, Martina De Dominicis presents Latente as a liturgy in a medieval-inspired, fictitious cult space. Ritual devotion and sensory experience become the focus of her explorations. Touch is understood as a primary sense that makes the invisible visible and contributes to our own sense of our bodies, but also as something endangered that needs to be protected. Latente appeals to our ability to comprehend with our bodies, as if it were something that is in danger of being lost in our visually dominated world.
