Richmond-born, Chicago-based rapper McKinley Dixon releases his new album "Magic, Alive!" on June 6 via City Slang, featuring the lead single "Sugar Water" (ft. Quelle Chris & Anjimile). For nearly a decade, Dixon has been crafting his experiences as a native Southerner living intermittently in Queens and an avid student of literature into vivid reflections on joy, pain and perseverance. His breakthrough, however, began in 2021 with the much-loved "For My Mama and Anyone Who Look Like Her" and continued in 2023 with "Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!" in 2023, both instrument-rich exercises in storytelling dealing with the trauma and grief of losing a young friend. These albums were emotional explorations in which Dixon vented his feelings in a marathon of literary references that included Toni Morrison and Greek mythology along with detailed personal reflections.
