Auroras have always fascinated and inspired mankind. Many Nordic cultures have developed their own explanations and myths to interpret this impressive natural phenomenon. These stories often reflect the worldview, spirituality and environment of the respective peoples. They show how people have tried to explain this fascinating natural phenomenon and give it meaning. Whether they were seen as spirits, gods, warriors or mischief, whether as a transition and bridge to the world of our ancestors - the auroras have always played a special role in the stories of these cultures. Even today, their mystical appearance stimulates the imagination and connects us with the ancient traditions of the world.
Science teaches us that auroras are caused by the interaction of solar wind, the earth's magnetic field and our atmosphere. They are not only beautiful to look at, they can also be dangerous. And they provide an insight into the complex processes between the Earth and the cosmos surrounding it. The lecture provides an overview of the current state of research.

Georg Henneges is a graduate physicist. After completing his studies in Mainz, he worked at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and at the National Labs in Los Alamos. For forty years now, he has been the director of the "Kraichgau Observatory Gondelsheim", where astrophotography, solar observation and public relations work are the main activities. As a lecturer on astronomical research topics, he is also often in demand from the press, radio and television.
