A formally and aesthetically unique, artfully surreal parable of German post-war history and a masterpiece of analog filmmaking.

Germany, 1945: five-year-old Sophie and her parents flee from the Red Army. All they have in their luggage are a few items of clothing and tickets for a ship to America. But fate has other plans. During a rest stop at the hotel, the family comes into conflict with the diabolical Nazi Scharf and his Hitler Youth Beckmann - with fatal consequences. In the brutal scuffle, little Sophie not only loses her parents, but also her memories. When she regains consciousness, the hotel is in Soviet hands and she is promoted to cook in the hotel. The decades fly by and Sophie grows into a woman under the care of Soviet soldier Vasily. She has no idea that the truth about her past will pave the way for her future - and that the first clue in the hotel's air-raid shelter for many years is just waiting to be discovered by her.
