Michael Sowa - Fragile Idyllen

In the organizer's words:

Michael Sowa is a master of comic art. For decades, he has been inspiring more and more people around the world with his paintings. No wonder! His classical-style paintings draw you into a world of their own, full of poetry, subtle comedy and irritation.

As Robert Gernhardt noted, Sowa has perfected the "traditional game of all so-called realistic painting: the game of deception, seduction and enchantment". In this way, he presents the absurdity and fragility of beauty in ever new ways. He is also an impressively multi-layered storyteller and inventor, as well as a precise observer and witty commentator on our times.

Together with Rudi Hurzlmeier and Ernst Kahl, Michael Sowa made a significant contribution to the entry of painting into comic art. The Caricatura Museum Frankfurt honored the three of them with a group exhibition back in 2013. To mark Michael Sowa's 80th birthday, the long-awaited solo exhibition will now follow from the end of June 2025.

The exhibition will provide a representative, equally exclusive insight into Michael Sowa's extensive oeuvre, combining iconic, political and illustrative works. From early political works as a graphic designer for the Green Party to works that have inscribed themselves in the collective visual memory of the Federal Republic of Germany and his legendary works for the satirical magazine TITANIC, to his illustrations for stories by renowned authors. Of course, all those who come for his famous works for the movie "The Fabulous World of Amelie" or scene designs for "Wallace & Gromit" will not be disappointed either. The exhibition will present Sowa's work from its artistic origins to his current works.

Thanks to almost 50 private lenders, a compilation has been created that has never been seen before.

The Caricatura Museum Frankfurt would like to thank the FAZIT-STIFTUNG and the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain for their financial support of the exhibition.
