Between the lines

"Don't play what's there, play what's not there!" was the artistic credo of legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday in May 2026. One person who has taken this motto particularly to heart is Ambrose Akinmusire. With the project "What's Not There", he searches for this mysterious "nothing" with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra and revives the special Miles spirit in a creative dialog with the music of Miles Davis. His light and airy tone and his dreamy melodies inevitably evoke memories of the Miles Davis sound of the cool jazz era. "A tranquil wash of beautiful sounds, in which space, sound and beauty come together", was the verdict of the renowned DownBeat magazine on Akinmusire's music, naming him "Jazz Trumpeter of the Year" in 2025 - an honor that was also bestowed on a certain Miles Davis in the 1950s.
