Film content:
The first reviews were scathing and sexist, whereas artists such as Philip Glass and Merce Cunningham quickly recognized her musical and choreographic talent. Meredith Monk's performances made her one of the most fascinating American artists. Billy Shebar was able to accompany Monk for years and was given access to her unique archive, photos and diaries. In conversations, Monk reflects on her personal and artistic development as well as her experiences of exclusion and loss. As she gets older, she plans to let go of her work and place it in the hands of younger people. Editor Sabine Kreyenbühl masterfully assembles a multidimensional tribute that reflects Monk's versatility. Silvia Bauer
