Under the title "Why bother?", the great American author Jonathan Franzen confronted his scruples about literary writing in an essay in the early 1990s. He asked about the social significance of literature, about the traces that novels, poetry or literary prose leave on an open-minded audience.
In times of social media, TikTok, rapidly growing media groups and unprecedented media omnipresence, the question of the relevance of literature and literary texts is once again being raised. Why the effort? When to write? Where to write? What tools to work with? How and under what conditions to publish, publish books? Why write?
These are the initial questions for a special literary-typographical exhibition at Aspekte Galerie, which accompanies the Münchner Schiene program conceived by the Münchner Volkshochschule as part of the Munich Literature Festival. The participating authors are allowed to write almost anything: prose poems, short stories, poetic statements, aphorisms, picture poems, recipes or secret texts. The results are diverse in their graphic forms, poetically surprising, typographically unusual and, in their self-critical reflection, they open up space for a new way of thinking about literature. They are open to the public in Hall E of the Gasteig HP8 and encourage a conversation about literature and its meaning - for people who enjoy reading and for people who might enjoy reading in the future.
