Naturworkshop: Nisthilfen für Bienen

There are more than 550 species of wild bees in Germany, over 40 of which live on the grounds of the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site. These "wild" relatives of the honey bee play a central role in our ecosystem: their pollination service ensures the preservation of plant diversity and thus makes a significant contribution to securing our food supply. However, many species are under threat and are finding fewer and fewer nesting opportunities.

On the wild bee nesting landscape, participants can observe wild bees and their different habits and learn why diversity in nature is so important. Each species has its own preferences and requirements for its habitat: some bees prefer open sand or clay, others use small cavities in plant stems, stones or even empty snail shells. Only very few wild bees nest in the classic "insect hotels" that can be bought in DIY stores or supermarkets.

Inspired by the nesting landscape and accompanied by a wild bee expert, children and parents can build their own species-appropriate nesting aid for the balcony or garden together. The result is not only a beautiful memento, but also a valuable contribution to the protection of wild bees.
