Tel Aviv after the massacre of October 7: musician Y. and his partner, dancer Yasmine, entertain a decadent Israeli upper class as sexy party clowns with flashy performances. The two dream of leaving their precarious lives behind and becoming wealthy through their talents alone. When Y. is commissioned by a Russian oligarch to write a bloody anthem to Israel's war against the Palestinians, the couple's lives change radically: while news of the horror in Gaza flickers across the screens and the streets of Tel Aviv fill with nationalist propaganda, Y. and Yasmine are confronted with the foundations of their moral coordinate system.

Since his film SYNONYMES won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, Nadav Lapid has become the most visible Israeli filmmaker in the world. In YES, he shows his homeland as a nation caught between decadence and destruction, hope and resignation. Told with brutality and tenderness, Lapid's satire of a society torn apart by war and terror is rightly regarded as Israel's most controversial film of the year.
