New Beginnings: Philippine Photographic Art

The Philippines - an archipelago of over 7,000 islands and more than 130 languages - is a country of many voices and identities. This cultural, social and geographical diversity also characterizes the country's contemporary photography. It is constantly in motion - changeable in form, meaning and message.

Shaped by a complex colonial history and social contrasts, Philippine photographic art illuminates moments of change and resilience. With experimental portraits, installations and documentary approaches, the works of Nana Buxani, Xyza Cruz Bacani, Tommy Hafalla, Gina Osterloh, Wawi Navarroza, Augustine Paredes, Veejay Villafranca and MM Yuindividualperspectives, lived realities and cultural processes come into focus.

New Beginnings: Philippine Photographic Art curated by Patrick Flores, Andrea Horvay and Celina Lunsford is the contribution of the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt on the occasion of the Philippines' Guest of Honour appearance at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2025, "Fantasy animates the air".
