Niklas Grüter - Growling of the sea
Cross-media exhibition about the life and work of seafarers on cargo ships.
The conditions of modern seafaring leave little room for adventure and seafaring romance: long working hours, harsh conditions and psychological pressure from superiors - coupled with homesickness due to long periods at sea. In this cross-media exhibition, Niklas Grüter uses photographs and letters to capture life and work on a cargo ship. A 360° film provides a glimpse inside the ship - where the everyday life of the seafarers takes place for months on end. They themselves have their say and talk about the feeling of isolation, their dreams and their hopes.
Niklas Grüter (*1996) lives and works as a photographer, filmmaker and multimedia producer in Berlin and Hanover. He graduated from Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts in "Visual Journalism" in 2022 with the project "Knurren der See".
Vernissage: Thursday, July 3, 2025, 6.30 pm
Talk at the vernissage: Mental health at sea - How are those who transport our goods around the globe doing?
Mental health in the workplace is fortunately attracting more and more attention. Unfortunately, the situation is different for people who work on merchant ships or cruise liners. Tough physical and mental stress is part of everyday life. So how do you deal with isolation, the dangers of sailing through war zones, illness or even death on board or at home? We discuss these issues with the former head of the Hamburg Port and Airport Medical Service, Dr. Martin Dirksen-Fischer, and Niklas Grüter. Dr. Kirsten Kappert-Gonther, Member of the Bundestag (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) will give a welcome address.
