When the young up-and-coming estate agent Thomas Hutter is sent to the Carpathian Mountains by his superior to conclude a lucrative real estate deal with a certain Count Orlok, he resolutely accepts the assignment. But his newlywed wife Ellen is reluctant to let him go. Her fears for Thomas are too great and her nightmares of death and destruction weigh too heavily on her. Thomas brushes Ellen's concerns aside. But when he finally reaches the count's castle and the gates close behind him, he senses that Ellen may have been right. And that the count carries nothing but death - and ruin.

With his adaptation of the oft-filmed Dracula story, Robert Eggers goes beyond a homage to F.W. Murnau's 1922 film version by giving the characters a backstory and complexity that previous interpretations of Bram Stoker's world-famous original did not yet have. NOSFERATU - THE UNDEAD is an artistic vision of its own, a masterpiece of horror in which the atmosphere of a permanent creepy spectacle is superimposed over all the images and provides clear proof that the fascination of this undead is still more than alive.
