The voice of West African psychedelic desert blues: Noura Mint Seymali returns to Kampnagel with a new album and an ecstatic sound between tradition and contemporary Mauritanian griot music.
The Mauritanian singer, composer and griot Noura Mint Seymali is one of the great voices of West Africa. Deeply rooted in a centuries-old tradition, she combines traditional repertoire with her own texts and poetic improvisations, which bridge the gap between the beginnings of Moorish music and the present day. Together with her husband Jeich Ould Chighaly on guitar, bassist Ousmane Touré and drummer Matthew Tinari, Seymali unleashes a musical sandstorm that combines experimental funk, desert blues and psychedelic rock into a veritable frenzy.
Her new album "Yenbett" (Glitterbeat Records) is the most powerful manifestation of this fusion to date: trance-like sounds of the ardine, a Mauritanian harp played only by women, break into distorted guitar riffs, hypnotic drums and deep bass lines - and above them rises Seymali's unmistakable voice, timeless and penetrating. She last played at Kampnagel in 2017 as part of the Theater der Welt festival and is now returning with her band for an ecstatic winter evening at the club.
