Book premiere with author Christoph Safferling - in conversation with Wolfgang Ischinger:
Venue: Room 366
A new chapter in the history of international law began with the war crimes trials in Nuremberg after the Second World War. And after the Cold War, the rules-based world order seemed realistic. But the reality in the early 21st century is different, and not just since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Israel's reaction to the massacre on October 7 also raises questions.
Christoph Safferling, international expert on international law, presents his latest book in conversation with Wolfgang Ischinger, former chairman of the Munich Security Conference and ambassador in Washington D.C. and London, and traces the path from 1945 to the present day. He identifies double standards and blind spots, especially in German politics. His assessment is sobering, his appeal sharp: Germany in particular must demand the standards of international law. The law does not tolerate compromises.
