He was "someone who held a magic key in his hand", wrote the critic Paul Jandl about Oleg Jurjew. His poems give us access to spaces that were previously unknown to us and allow us to perceive the world in a different light than before reading them. And yet much of the work of the poet, who died in 2018, has so far remained unknown to the German-speaking public. Throughout his life, Yuryev wrote poetry exclusively in Russian, and even though many of his texts were translated into German: The majority of his poems remained untranslated.

Now Olga Martynova and Daniel Jurjew have published Verses from the Heavenly Typeset (Elif Verlag), a volume that also makes these spaces accessible in a special way: they asked a large number of Russian-speaking poets to select their favorite poems by Oleg Jurjew and to justify this selection in a short essay. The poems were then translated by an equally illustrious number of German-speaking poets, many of whom were friends of the author. The result is an impressive lyrical collective work that not only celebrates a great representative of the art of language, but also language itself.
