»Oma kommt aus Schlesien« – Die Erinnerungen der Nachfahren. Ein Seminar für die Kinder und Enkel der Vertriebenen und alle Interessierten

In the organizer's words:

Venue: HAUS SCHLESIEN, Dollendorfer Str. 412, 53639 Königswinter-Heisterbacherrott

Stories of origin move families - the fates of refugees are still very topical today. However, questions about origin, home and identity can rarely be answered clearly, especially if some of the ancestors came from another region. More than 25 percent of Germans state that they themselves or a family member are a German expellee. They grew up with the stories "from the homeland" or even just with an indefinable feeling of not belonging here: Many children and grandchildren carry the burden of the memories and traumas of their displaced ancestors. The experiences of this generation have left their mark and often unconsciously continue to shape their lives and their families to this day. Even if they were born in the "new homeland" and have no memories of Silesia of their own, their parents' experiences of flight and the feeling of alienation are passed on to their descendants. The behaviors and fears developed from the experience of being uprooted have in part been "passed on" to the grandchildren's generation.

Using the forced flight from Silesia as an example, the seminar deals with experiences and insights into how families dealt with flight and expulsion. Introductory lectures by academics and authors will deal with a wide variety of aspects and provide a sound basis for the subsequent discussion rounds, in which participants will be able to discuss the theses and share their own experiences and impressions. In addition to the opportunity to use the knowledge imparted to understand and classify the situation of the generation that experienced the Holocaust, as well as their own experiences, the exchange with each other should above all contribute to coming to terms with individual family history, dealing with feelings of homelessness and understanding one's own patterns of behavior.
