The On/Off lecture series offers students of the Department of Design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences and all visitors interested in design a wide range of insights into interdisciplinary topics at the interface of design, art, sociology and technology. The lecture series promotes interdisciplinary exchange and opens up valuable perspectives on current issues, developments and trends in the art and design world.

The lectures take place on Wednesdays at 19:00 in the atrium of Building 6, Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.

Registration is not required. Free admission.

Archival Consciousness

Host: Prof. Holger Jacobs

Mariana Lanari is a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam (Amsterdam School of Heritage, Memory and Material Culture). As an artist and researcher with a background in political science, she is also co-founder of Archival Consciousness. Her research combines computational ontology and data science with performance art to develop new forms of mediation between physical and digital collections in cultural libraries and archives.

Remco van Bladel runs a multidisciplinary design studio in Amsterdam, specializing in book design, publishing platforms, curatorial projects, branding, type design and interactive applications. He is also a lecturer in typography in the Graphic Design Arnhem program at ArtEZ University of the Arts and co-founder of "Archival Consciousness" together with Mariana Lanari.

In his lecture, he will talk about design research in the context of cultural transformation processes and the research focus of the Design Cultures Institute for Applied Design Research (dci).

Barbara Peveling is an ethnologist, author and journalist. She studied in Tübingen and Paris and researches the topics of migration and religion in the Mediterranean region. Her dissertation Zwischen Orient und Okzident. Identity and Difference of North African Jews in France was awarded the Manfred Görg Junior Prize in Munich in 2015.

Torsten Goffin is a television author, photographer, gastro-journalist and lecturer. He has written numerous screenplays and runs the food blog "Allem Anfang". In 2015, together with Stevan Paul, he published the first German-language cookbook dedicated to cooking with and pairing craft beer.

Uwe J. Reinhardt is a professor and cultural scientist, journalist and exhibition organizer with a focus on conception/creative writing. Reinhardt is head of the edi - Exhibition Design Institute and responsible for the "design editorial team".

Maiken Laackmann was appointed Professor of Animation and 3D Moving Image at the Department of Design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in the winter semester of 2025. The graduate designer has dedicated herself to the potential of the moving image for over 20 years. As an artist, former managing director and professor, she combines a broad spectrum of creative and technical skills. Her expertise includes 3D animation, augmented reality, frame-by-frame animation, character animation, motion design and AI-supported project workflows.

Massimiliano Audretsch was appointed Professor of Typography at the Department of Design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in the winter semester of 2025. His versatile design practice combines graphic design and type design with design education and typographic art research. With a background in graphic design and art direction, he has worked with studios including Meiré and Meiré and Johnson/Kingston, designing visual identities for institutions and brands.
