Three crooks are released from prison: The white-collar criminal Ronald Bruck (Charles Regnier), the con man Kurt Lehnert (Curd Jürgens) and Charly Bauer (Walter Giller), the man for the rough stuff. As soon as they are released, the trio found a company with a business model that is quite legal. They want to participate in the economic boom by buying and selling VW Beetles. The plan works and they become part of the shady high society of the young Federal Republic. This combination of contradictions and sameness cannot go well in the long run.
After Das Mädchen Rosemarie, director Rolf Thiele once again made a satire on the economic miracle. His "pompous will to style" (Joe Hembus) and an adventurous gangster novel as a model made the film an over-the-top and extravagant satire that is worth rediscovering. What's more, the film is set in Hamburg and the cast is superb, right down to the smaller roles.
