Paula Modersohn-Becker: Short Stories

In the organizer's words:

It's time for new short stories again!

How could the most bitter moment in Paula Becker's young career in 1899 become the driving force behind her artistic development? What do we know about the painter's colors and working materials? What mysteries are hidden in her "Self-Portrait on the 6th Wedding Anniversary"? And what convictions did Paula Modersohn-Becker and Rainer Maria Rilke share?

In thematic presentations of the collection, we invite you to immerse yourself in selected moments from the life, work and reception of Paula Modersohn-Becker. The presentation of the paintings is complemented by texts, documents and objects that tell exciting and multifaceted short stories about the artist's work.

In Short Stories 2025, we will focus on the young artist's departure for Paris on New Year's Eve 1899, follow her for a week in the art metropolis in spring 1906, provide insights into her painting techniques and pose questions about her iconic puzzle painting "Self-Portrait on the 6th Wedding Anniversary".

From 27.9.2025, we will also be dedicating a short story to Rainer Maria Rilke to mark his 150th birthday!
