Perfektomat and the Retrogod - LIVE
On Saturday, November 22, Schleuse Zwei will once again become a place for imaginative daring. This is when Perfektomat and Retrogott will really let off steam. For the band, both hip hop and jazz are an expression of a musical attitude whose greatest strength lies in its maximum openness to creative experimentation without blinkers.
Under the supervision of bassist Joscha Oetz, Perfektomat and Retrogott have recently joined forces for a new full-length album, which the band will present at the Musikbar im Bunker. The follow-up to their debut "Zeit Hat Uns", which caused a sensation in 2023, is entitled "Notausgang des Abendlandes" and will be released on ENTBS.
While the predecessor "Zeit Hat Uns" was characterized more by winding forms, intricate rhythms and complex compositions, the beat-heavy sound of the new record is closer to the boom bap of the 90s. Another novelty: this time, 11 vocalists from NYC, Santiago de Chile, Odessa, La Habana/Barcelona, Düsseldorf, Mainz/Berlin, Heidelberg and of course Cologne are represented with rap and vocals.
The diversity of the personnel is also reflected in the record's message. With "Notausgang des Abendlandes", Perfektomat and Retrogott counter the right-wing populist fear of doom with equal parts criticism and irony and playfully encourage the practice of dialog and open-endedness not only in art. Different genres, continents and languages merge here in all self-reflective modesty to create a musical glimmer of hope with a solid foundation of jazz, hip-hop and funk. The result has a mix-tape character in the best sense of the word, combining different, independent musical components into a whole that is both coherent and varied.
