In his new stories, Peter Stamm tells of the lives of his characters in his usual approachable and subtle manner. They search for a new beginning, have to endure compromises and face the crises of the present: after an accident at home, a Swiss ski instructor teaches in a West German ski hall. An actress loses herself in her characters. And snow and ice cover an abandoned town. In Auf ganz dünnem Eis, Peter Stamm shows how artfully and multi-layered stories can be told in just a few pages, how a single story can keep you occupied for longer than a full-length novel.

Peter Stamm, born in 1963, studied English, psychology and psychopathology for several semesters and has worked in various professions, including in Paris and New York. He lives in Switzerland. He has worked as a freelance author since 1990. He has written more than a dozen radio plays. Since his debut novel Agnes in 1998, he has published six more novels, five collections of stories and a volume of plays, including the novels Weit über das Land, Die sanfte Gleichgültigkeit der Welt. Die sanfte Gleichgültigkeit der Welt was awarded the 2018 Swiss Book Prize.
