PHILLIP BOA & THE VOODOOCLUB

Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub is a German avant-garde pop and independent band that is strongly influenced by its head/songwriter, singer, guitarist and producer Phillip Boa. The music is influenced by indie/alternative rock and avant-garde. The style of Boa's lyrics is a mixture of absurd reveries, love songs and sometimes bizarre and disturbing content, but Boa's greatest strength is perhaps that he always manages to find poetic beauty that underlines everything he writes.

Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub are one of the most renowned German bands, internationally recognized by critics and fans alike (ARD). To date, they are the German band with the most "Album & Single of the week" awards in the British music press (8 x "Single of the week" and 5 x "Album of the week" in the NME, Melody Maker and Sounds). Phillip Boa was among the top 20 in the survey "Made in Germany - the most influential German musicians". The bandleader is "one of the sharpest observers of our society" and "Germany's most distinguished songwriters", with a "cynical-poetic view, full of enigmatic metaphors and sharp wisdom" (New Musical Express) as well as "magical prose/poetry in lyrics and figures, simultaneously chorally tender and brute, romantic where it fits". "His ideology is a refusal to pander to the media..." (Rolling Stone magazine).

After many intense years and albums, the showcase BLANK EXPRESSION (A History of Singles 1986-2016) was released by Capitol Records/Universal Music and reached number 8 in the German album charts. In addition to the most important singles, the collection also contained 12 new songs. The most successful release to date is the album EARTHLY POWERS (2018, Cargo Records/Constrictor), with which the band reached number 3 in the album charts.

In 2023, the band re-released their iconic album BOAPHENIA. Originally released in 1993, the album is now considered a cult classic. It was recorded in London, New York, Long Island and Malta and produced by Tony Visconti, Craig Leon, Eroc and Boa. The extensive anniversary edition includes a collection of 10 brand new songs entitled "The Porcelain Files". Released by Capitol Records /Universal Music, the album once again made it into the Top 10 of the German album charts.
The Polydor major debut album COPPERFIELD was re-released in August 2024 as a re-edition (reworked & remastered incl. 5 new songs) by Capitol Records/Universal Music and reached number 12 in the album charts as the best re-entry.
HAIR, one of the most important German indie rock albums, was released in April 2025 via Capitol
Records/Universal Music as an anniversary edition and re-edition (incl. 10 new songs "The Honeymoon Files"). The internationally acclaimed, award-winning album with its experimental mix of indie rock, post-punk and art pop reached the top 3 of the official album charts.

On stage, the Voodooclub played with bands and artists such as David Bowie, Bob Dylan, John Lydon's Public Image Ltd, Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, Björk, The Fall, Residents, Gun Club, Iggy Pop and Manic Street Preachers.
Voodooclub was produced by Tony Visconti (David Tony Visconti (David Bowie), John Leckie (Morrissey, New Order), Gareth Jones (Interpol, Depeche Mode), Gordon Raphael (Strokes), Ian Grimble (Manic Street Preachers, Bauhaus, Mumford and Sons) and worked with Aphex Twin, LFO, Schneider TM, The Notwist, Jaki Liebezeit (CAN) and Brian Viglione (Dresden Dolls, Violent Femmes, Nine Inch Nails).
