"Melancholy and historiography" - The historian Karl Schlögel as a chronicler of the present

According to Schlögel, a melancholy view of the present prevents us from deceiving ourselves and others. Schlögel does not see melancholy as a psychiatric or psychotherapeutic issue, but as a spiritual one. "Melancholy is not reverie and fantasy, but close observation, alertness, a sharpened sense of what is the case." Could the remedy recommended by Schlögel perhaps even be helpful?

Since 2023, the philosophical practitioner Dorothea Sophie Höck and the Kunsthaus Erfurt have been inviting interested parties to regular salon discussions in the gallery at the Kunsthaus Erfurt. The Philosophical Salon takes place once a month on a Wednesday evening. Interested and thoughtful people are invited. No previous knowledge of philosophy is required.

A contribution towards expenses of 5 euros or more is requested on site. The next Philosophical Salon will take place on 18.03.2026.
