König-Heinrich-Platz is one of the places where Duisburg has reinvented itself time and again: Where there was still a cemetery in the 19th century, an urban center gradually developed - a place for theater and cinema, for shopping, visits to the authorities and major performances, for everyday journeys and extraordinary encounters. Over the decades, the ideas of what Duisburg wanted to look like - and live like - were consolidated here.
The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover König-Heinrich-Platz. More than 150 years of urban planning, political decisions and lived history overlap here in a small space.
At the center are the rich holdings of the Duisburg City Archive: Building files that are far more than just construction and approval processes. Rather, they are windows into past living environments, make changes visible and allow a deep insight into the development of the square and its buildings. Numerous photographs, films and audio documents make life around König-Heinrich-Platz directly tangible. The exhibition not only shows how the square was created - but also tells of its use, design and significance: a place where architecture and everyday life meet again and again.
"Platz gemacht!" is a cooperation project between the Duisburg City Archive and the Museum of Cultural and City History Duisburg.
The exhibition can be seen until January 17, 2027.
