The Mahler Museum has a very special exhibit from the history of the instrument: a Steinway-Welte reproduction piano, more precisely a Welte T 100 (red) Systems model developed in 1904. Punched tape technology made it possible to record and accurately reproduce pieces of music over 100 years ago. At first glance, it looks like an ordinary piano - except that the keys move by themselves.
Playback is effected by rollers inserted into the mechanism. The special feature: The KomponistenQuartier has one of the four rolls that Gustav Mahler personally recorded. "This is how I wanted it and how I played it", he inscribed the rolls in 1905.
Trained volunteers explain the technology during the presentation and allow guests to participate in the music, recorded by the composer himself.
The presentation is included in museum admission
Duration: 20 minutes
