About the play

The career of Kurt A. Becher (1909-1995) shows how Nazi perpetrators became "followers" after 1945 who were not only able to operate successfully in the business world. Grain wholesaling made him one of the richest men in West Germany and provided him with important positions in the Bremen economy.
On February 11, 1948, the Nuremberg Trial Chamber classified him in Group V "Exonerated". In January 1961, the Weser-Kurier reported on a trial against Becher in Frankfurt am Main and his role in the Eichmann trial under the title "Business with human lives?". It was only when Becher had to testify as a witness in the Eichmann trial at Bremen District Court in June 1961 that his Nazi past was publicly discussed in Bremen.
In 1982, the publication by Bremen journalist Karla Müller-Tupath about his crimes triggered a strong reaction. After five months, in October 1982, the Bremen public prosecutor's office dropped the investigation against him "for lack of evidence" - without having questioned Becher.
