Public Health Filmfestival 2025

In the organizer's words:

The Public Health Film Festival is an event organized by the Pettenkofer School of Public Health. Once a year, it brings together people in Munich and online who are interested in public, global and planetary health. We want to encourage participants to adopt new perspectives through the medium of film, to reflect critically and to discuss current public health issues with other interested parties. The festival helps to make public health more visible and topromote interdisciplinary networking.

This year's program:

Tuesday, Nov. 11, 6 p.m., HFF (Cinema 1): SAMIA (German version)

Tickets via: https://phff.de/de/programm/samia/

From the race on the way to school to the Olympic Games in Beijing: Samia's big dream is to run. In her home country of Somalia, however, women are not allowed to take part in sport. The risk of being caught is high. The film is based on the true story of Somali track and field athlete Samia Yusuf Omar, who faces all obstacles and dangers in pursuit of her dream.

Following the screening of the film, we will hold an exciting discussion with experts from academia and practice to shed light on the inequalities between the Global South and the Global North. We will talk about the factors that lead people to make the serious decision to leave their home countries and expose themselves to the dangers of flight. And last but not least, what impact all this has on human health.

Saturday, November 15, 10:30 a.m., LMU Main Building (Lecture Hall A240): CHECKER TOBI UND DAS GEHEIMNIS UNSERES PLANETEN (Family event; German original version)
Tickets via:
https://phff.de/de/programm/checker-tobi-und-das-geheimnis-unseres-planeten/

In search of the secret of our planet, the popular presenter Checker Tobitakes us on an exciting journey around the world. A mysterious message in a bottle takes Tobi from the Pacific island of Vanuatu to the eternal ice of Greenland, the underwater world of Australia and right into the urban jungle of India. And we are there!

In addition to the film, we are looking forward to an exciting, child-friendly discussion on the topic of "Our blue planet & me". We want to talk to smart people from science and practice about how our actions affect the environment and what we can all do to make our blue planet a little better.

Tuesday, 18.11., 20:00, Rio Cinema (Room 2): CALL JANE (German version)
Tickets via:
https://phff.de/de/programm/call-jane/

In the conservative USA of the 1960s, Joy experiences first-hand what the legal ban on abortion means. Although Joy's pregnancy poses a serious threat to her own life, the doctors refuse to allow her to have an abortion. By chance, Joy comes across the "Janes" - an underground organization that puts the decision back into the hands of women like Joy. The film is based on the true story of the courageous "Janes".

Following the film, we will talk to experts from science and practice about women's health and the current situation here in Germany. Do women have a right to self-determination? What about access to information? And what impact does all this have on women's physical and mental health?

*Stream and online discussion*

01.11. - 30.11. Free stream of IRRESISTIBLE (OF) via phff.de

Tuesday, 25.11., 19:00, Zoom: WHY WE CAN'T STOP EATING (English)

The documentary IRRESISTIBLE - WHY WE CAN'T STOP EATING by Dr. Chris van Tulleken impressively shows how strongly global nutrition is shaped by industrial processes, targeted marketing and political inaction - with far-reaching consequences for our health. Our discussion will focus on the question of how political, scientific and social approaches can help to reduce the excessive consumption of UPFs and make food systems more health-promoting.

On November 25, there will be an accompanying English-language discussion via Zoom. Participation is free of charge, registration via this registration link.
