PULSE x Fred Frith

In the organizer's words:

PULSE meets Fred Frith As part of their one-year residency at the Center for Art in Bremen, the progressive string quartet PULSE will be working with the world-famous British composer and guitarist Fred Frith. Fred Frith's multifaceted oeuvre combines several artistic careers. He is a composer of fragile avant-garde music in the tradition of John Cage and Earle Brown. He is also a distinguished innovator who, together with his colleagues in the band "Henry Cow", created new concepts of underground rock; as an improviser, he developed his own language on the guitar and managed to expand the use of this instrument. As a sought-after expert, he taught improvisation at Mills College, California (USA) and at the Music Academy in Basel. Bremen-based violinist Johannes Haase, a member of PULSE, studied with Fred Frith. They have been working together regularly ever since. The joint project between PULSE and Fred Frith in October 2025 at the Center for Art in Bremen consists of two parts: a concert and workshops. The concert series starts on Saturday, October 30 and Sunday, October 31, 2025 at 8 pm. The program includes the two compositions "Fell" and "Lelekovice" by Fred Frith, but also a world premiere: PULSE and Fred Frith are developing a new collaborative piece that combines graphic scores, improvisation, field recordings and other creative approaches. In the run-up to the performances, the surroundings of the Center for Art and its neighborhood will be involved. To this end, the musicians invite interested people to soundwalks, i.e. walks that focus on conscious listening and perception of the surroundings. They help us to become more aware of our immediate acoustic surroundings and environment in general. They take place on 16.9., 30.9. and 21.10. at 10:30 am. Please register at kontakt[at]pulsepulse.
