Johan lets himself drift with life and fits perfectly into Copenhagen's gay scene with its pubs, parties and one-night stands. He spends a lot of time at Adonis, the city's only gay sauna. He recently started working there and enjoys sharing non-committal sexual experiences with the visitors. Despite everything, Johan longs for real closeness - and finds it with William, a sensitive trans man. But not everyone at Adonis agrees that he has fallen in love with someone they don't see as part of their male alliance.

Not fit, not white, not masculine enough for Adonis? Mathias Broe's debut "Sauna" is a lustful film about men who love men - and at the same time settles accounts with a discriminatory gay dating culture. Broe skillfully navigates the relationship of his main characters. The two want to get involved with each other with lust and curiosity, but constantly have to deal with the expectations of those around them. "Sauna" is sensitive, sexy and a great celebration of intimate connections. Because these always arise when people free themselves from the gaze of others.
