Rachmaninoffs "Ganznächtliche Vigil" | Vox Quadrata

Sergei Rachmaninoff dresses the traditional Russian Orthodox liturgy, established over centuries, in a late Romantic guise and creates a unique symbiosis of seemingly archaic moments and large-scale, expansive soundscapes. Even if he is not necessarily known for his choral music, Rachmaninoff has succeeded here in creating an absolute masterpiece and showpiece that is rarely heard in this country.

The chamber choir Vox Quadrata was founded by Tristan Meister in Mannheim in 2015. Depending on the requirements of the repertoire, the ensemble consists of up to 60 semi-professional singers from the Rhine-Neckar region and beyond, who come together on a project-related basis for choir and concert weekends. The choir's repertoire includes challenging a cappella literature from all eras with a special focus on romantic and modern music. Conductor Tristan Meister is also keen to perform rarely heard works.
