Rechtsextremismus im Gaming

In the organizer's words:

Right-wing extremist strategies in games and communities - and what we can do about it.

52% of all people in Germany play games for an average of around two hours a day - the mass phenomenon of gaming has long been part of everyday life for a wide range of age groups. Whether it's online games on a smartphone, console games or fantasy epics on a high-performance PC, the field is more diverse than ever. Through gaming, people find friends, cohesion and can escape their stressful everyday lives. Not least due to the pandemic, gaming communities are an essential pillar of many people's social lives.

(Online) games are also a reflection of social debates - and political actors of all stripes are part of the gaming scene. Even if they are only a niche phenomenon: Right-wing extremist game development, platforms and modification options for popular games regularly open the way for extremist and inhumane content to find its way into many games. Communities exchange ideas - including on political topics - online and via anonymous game chats.

Reason enough to address the topic of right-wing extremism in gaming together with experts from academia, media education, practice and political education. In addition to an introduction to the state of research and the current situation with regard to right-wing extremist content and agitation in games, we want to talk about options for action, methods and ways of dealing with it in everyday life.

The event is taking place as part of the nationwide "Netzpolitik und Demokratie" campaign days organized by the Central Office for Political Education. The full program is available at www.netzpolitische-bildung.de
