with Voices Aotearoa New Zealand and the Orchestra in the Staircase

This stunning new arrangement of Mozart's Requiem, created by Robert Wiremu, is brought to life by the acclaimed Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir and Orchestra in the Staircase, conducted by Dr. Karen Grylls.
This unique concert experience retains the virtuosic yet intimate atmosphere of the original - but with a fresh new perspective and influences from Māori musical traditions. Inspired by Aotearoa and Antarctica, the work explores motifs of flight, birdsong, landscape and nature, balancing a national tragedy in New Zealand's history between classical requiem and indigenous mourning ritual.

VOICES is New Zealand's leading national choir, performing regularly at festivals, collaborating with orchestras and artists and touring internationally for special projects. On its European tour this year, the choir will give two exclusive concerts at MARKK as part of the PHŒNiX festival "Colonial Interferences".
