In "Sinnbilder", Reinhold Messner talks about what makes him so successful: renunciation instead of consumption, the ability to shed ballast. What led him from the confines of a farming village in the Dolomites to the highest peaks in the world? What values have guided him on his journey and what decisive role does renunciation play in this? What can we gain by leaving something out?

But Messner doesn't just address the questions of his own life. The focus is on issues that affect us all: sustainability, climate change and intergenerational justice. How does he deal with ageing, and what do death, religion and spirituality mean to him?
