A short story for his 150th birthday
Rainer Maria Rilke was more closely associated with art than almost any other writer of his time.
With the exhibition "Rilke and Art" in the "Short Stories" series, the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum is paying tribute to this important German poet, who would have celebrated his 150th birthday in December 2025 and whose life and work were interwoven with that of Paula Modersohn-Becker in many ways.
The presentation sheds light on Rilke's dazzling network in the art scene, traces various stages of his involvement with the visual arts and impressively demonstrates Rilke's understanding of early modernism.
Based on his texts, the exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures and works on paper from museum and private collections - including works by Paula Modersohn-Becker, Clara Rilke-Westhoff, Auguste Rodin, Paul Cézanne and Pablo Picasso - as well as previously unpublished originals of his writings.
It also traces Rilke's close friendship with Paula Modersohn-Becker, to whom he created a literary monument in 1908 with his "Requiem for a Friend".
